Community Reserves
Indigenous & community conservation areas (ICCAs)
Natural and/or modified ecosystems containing significant biodiversity values, ecological services and cultural values, voluntarily conserved by indigenous peoples and local communities, both sedentary and mobile, through customary laws or other effective means (IUCN 2010). (Read more)
Government-community co-managed nature areas
- National or state protected areas managed by local communities, e.g. Pin Supu Forest Reserve by Batu Puteh Kinabatangan Tourism Cooperative, and urban community forests.
- Catchment reserves, e.g. tagal and tagang in Malaysian Borneo.
- Marine reserves, e.g. Locally-Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) in Indonesia.
Tagal
The Tagal system is a method of biosphere management of rivers adapted from the traditional practices of the Sabahan traditional local community in Malaysia. The technique has been adopted and extended by the Sabah State Department of Fisheries (DoF) for the rehabilitation of aquatic resources in the state. (Read more)
