Kokol Nature

Kokol Nature Collective

We are a collective of forested farmlands on Kokol Hill, Kota Kinabalu (KK), Sabah. As custodians of the nearest Dipterocarp forest from Kota Kinabalu, we are committed to the conservation of our biodiverse rainforest for ecosystem services, and for the nature education of future generations.

At 700-900m a.s.l. and only 23km away from KK, our hillside habitats are blessed with cool comfortable climate, stunning sunrise over Mount Kinabalu, and sunset over KK city. Also present are high biodiversity especially in plants, insects, and birds, as well as rich forest gardens (which we hope to enhance by sustainable, regenerative, natural farming techniques from agroecology, e.g. permaculture & syntropic agroforestry).

The majestic Dipterocarps form the backbone of our rainforest and is the very reason why S.E.A. rainforests are the tallest in the world. Hike with us and discover the diversity of Dipterocarps like Kapur & Meranti/Seraya in our forest.
Discover rare forest fruits like Lotong the forest Rambutan (Nephelium cuspidatum, left). And learn more about Petaling (Ochanostachys amentacea, right) that gives name to one of the largest cities in Malaysia.
Did you know that the seeds of a common rainforest tree, Kembang Semangkuk (Scaphium macropodum/ affine) is a traditional medicine and often used in cooling desserts like Cheng Tng?
Help us in helping the rainforest, by salvaging wildlings of rare forest species, and planting a biodiverse forest garden landscape that buffer the rainforest.

Eco-business for Nature Conservation and Education

We hope to realise our vision through your support or investment. Fly, hike, camp, cook, plant, build, or simply santai (hangout) with us to help in the conservation of the nearest Dipterocarp rainforest from Kota Kinabalu, for the nature education of future generations. You are also welcomed to bring your small groups for other nature-related activities like wildlife-watching (esp. birds & insects) and forest therapy (or bathing, shinrin-yoku). With enough support, we hope to ultimately establish a Kokol Nature Reserve, as well as a Kinabalu Nature Centre that features our collective of community effort in districts around Kinabalu.

Jimmy the forest farmer: explore & learn about Nature on my family land of forest and farm.
Nature connectors: explore and learn about tropical flora & fauna with our advisor and his biologist friends like Dhivvian & Michael.
Bee connected: walk with us and learn more about stingless bees in our diverse forest garden, while experience how some of us live off-grid with minimal inputs.
From sky to valley: unlease your adventurous side by exploring Nature with us – paraglide or camp with a view of KK, and hike down the steep valley to some hidden waterfalls.
Golden hours: end your day with a stunning sunset over Kota Kinabalu (and a beautiful rainbow if the gold decides to reveal itself).
Savoury sunset: discover & learn how to cook native ingredients from our forest & farm, and enjoy a rich buffet of natural goodness over romantic sunset.
Stay overnight, set up a light trap, and be amazed by the high diversity of mid-elevation insect communities, esp. in moths. (Photos by Dhivvian)
Stay with us in tents or sulap (bamboo huts) and wake up to a spectacular sunrise over Mount Kinabalu & calls of Nature.
We also welcome like-minded people/ partnerships to co-build sustainable buildings like treehouses and bamboo/ wooden longhouses – like those by our friends at Arkitrek.

Just write in to discuss possibilities!
